For a simpler drawing, you can add a solid value throughout the snail's shell and not worry about the stripy pattern. Adding the value to the snail's shell can be very time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. As you draw the light and dark stripes, leave a lighter section near the middle to represent the shell's shine. Add the value on the left side of the shell by alternating between dark and light sections to give the shell its pattern. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value along the shell to make it shiny. Use a darker value at the bottom to give the drawing more dimension and volume. Continue adding lines in the gaps of the spiral to get the pattern on the shell. Alternate between a dark and light value as you shade the entire shell. When you add value to the snail's shell, use a series of lines that go in between the spaces of the spiral. Re-draw any of the final sketch lines that you may have accidentally erased.įinal Step (optional): You can add more value throughout your snail drawing for extra detail. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. Step 13 (optional): For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Make the line at the bottom a bit more wavy to give the body a more organic and less static feel. Step 12: Use the line at the bottom as a guide to draw the rest of the soft part of the snail's body. Follow the path of the guide as you darken the line and make the left side of the shell a bit thinner. Step 11: Use the curved line on the left as a guide to draw the rest of the snail's shell. Drawing the spiral can be tricky, so take your time when you draw it. Once you get the shape of the spiral right, darken the lines. The right edge of the spiral extends outside of the original circle for a bigger, rounder shell. The space between the curved lines should gradually get bigger. Sketch lightly at first to get the shape of the spiral right. We hope you enjoyed leaning how to draw a bat.Step 10: Continue drawing the detail on the snail's shell by making the spiral longer. Colour in the shell and add some patterns. Go ahead now and add extra details like a slimey trail from behind where the snail has moved. Refer to the reference image above.Īnd we’re finished. Do the same again for the second antenna, drawing out to the right of the head at about 20 degrees.įinally, add the two mouth feelers underneath the antenna. Draw two lines up at 80 degrees and creating a circle at the top to form the antenna. Finish by drawing the tail line back towards the shell. Continue this line down and to the left underneath the shell and out to form the tail of the slug-like body. Start by drawing out to the right from just under the front lip, then curve back around like a bean shape. Then draw a line down from the front lip to extend the lip down to be longer and refine the shape. Now we’ll add in the spiral line to form the curled shape of the shell. Using the shape drawn in step 1, now trace that shape but add in the front shell lip and the spiral bulge section. Start by drawing an egg shape laying on its side. Some species of snails can be eaten and are considered a delicacy. The largest snail recorded was a Giant African Land Snail, measured at 12 inches long. The average life span of a snail around the house is 5 years. The reason why snails leave a trail of mucus behind them is because it helps reduce friction against the ground making it easy for them to slide along.Snails can see with their antenna eyes, but they can’t hear. This is a six step tutorial suitable for the beginner and intermediate skill level. In this tutorial we’ll learn how to draw a snail moving along the ground.
